Material & motif system
Four surface materials, each carrying a distinct emotional register. The lock form is constant — the material tells you why.
Materials — the vocabulary of the lock
Brass
heritage · earned · warm
Achievement, trust, history. The heart-lock hero form.
Use: hero, shield state, milestones
Iridescent
queer · transparent · futurity
Chromatic glass — identity as spectrum. The pride lock.
Use: onboarding, community, hope
Frosted
private · translucent · calm
What's behind stays behind. Opacity as privacy.
Use: E2EE features, quiet states
Steel
utility · unsentimental · hard
The workbench. Infrastructure without drama.
Use: admin, audit tables, raw data
Motifs — the language carved into the material
PCB trace
Right-angle pathways with node dots. The lock's inner logic made visible — security you can inspect. Engrave into flat surfaces at 10–20% line weight vs. container edge.
Kintsugi seam
The spectrum scar where the shield was broken and repaired in gold. Used as section dividers and completion states. Never merely decorative.
Ember field
Warm amber particles on black — community memory, embers of the movement. Background ambience behind shields and hero moments. 20–40 particles max.
Scene moods — material × lighting context
01 — Cosmic
Starfield void. Hope, horizon, founding narrative. Iridescent material.
02 — Hearth
Brick + ember. Intimacy, survival, chosen family. Brass material.
03 — Fabric
Folded cloth. Privacy, softness, what's held close. Frosted material.
Rules
DOKeep the lock form constant. Change the material to shift meaning, not the silhouette.
DOEngrave PCB traces at a lower visual weight than the outline — they are inside the material, not on top of it.
DOReserve the heart variant for emotionally-weighted moments (community, care, loss). The standard padlock carries infrastructure.
DON'TNever mix materials in a single scene. One lock, one mood.
DON'TNever use the iridescent or brass materials for warning, error, or destructive states — materials are earned, not functional.
DON'TNever redraw the heart-lock silhouette. Use assets/logo/aegis-shield.svg.
